Bicycles are seasonal transportation, so many owners of these two-wheelers are concerned about their proper storage in winter. If you are a fortunate owner of such a means of transportation, you should prepare for this in advance. There are several ways to properly prepare your bicycle for storage during the winter season. Our company, KOMORA, offers to rent a place in a warehouse where your belongings will be stored under optimal conditions.
Storing a bicycle
There are several recommendations on how to properly store a bicycle. If they are not followed, metal parts can become rusty, and paint surfaces can become dull. To be able to ride in the spring, a lot of effort may be required. It’s also not guaranteed that the mechanisms can be restored after improper storage. Therefore, here are a few recommendations on how to properly prepare your bicycle for winter storage at the warehouse of our company, KOMORA:
- Disassembly. This action is not mandatory, but it is desirable. It is possible to leave the components intact, but thorough cleaning will be more difficult. It is agreed that the quality of service will be higher if the bike is disassembled. The wheels, pedals, and cranks are removed, and the wheel hubs, bottom bracket, chain, and sprockets, and derailleur are disassembled. The removable parts include the cassette, handlebar, saddle, and brakes.
- Washing. Proper preserving cannot be done without prior cleaning. Water, brushes, scrapers, and cleaning agents should be used. All components need to be washed (from the chain and sprockets to the handlebar and saddle). Special attention is paid to lubricated components. Dirt and deposits should be removed with a special cleaning agent, such as gasoline. After washing, the components are dried and wiped dry with a cloth.
- Lubrication. Before preserving, all splined and threaded connections with consistent grease are treated. Use special metal conservation compounds to prevent rusting of the chain, wheel rim, sprockets, and similar components. Lithol and other lubricants can be used for this purpose. The contents are applied in a thick layer. Non-metallic coatings are treated with wax polish, and leather seats are lubricated with glycerin.
- Assembly. To ensure that the bicycle takes up minimal space in the storage box, compact storage is performed. The wheels are stored separately, and the pedals are pressed against the frame. The handlebars are turned 90°. It is mandatory to loosen the tension on the cables.
The price for storing a bicycle in Kyiv at our company, KOMORA, depends on the size of the storage box and the rental period. Therefore, it is more advantageous to store the bike in a disassembled state. Separate components should be wrapped in fabric or paper for protection.
Choosing the right storage space
The proper place for preserving a two-wheeled vehicle is an enclosed space. At our storage facility, you can rent a box where optimal conditions will be maintained. There are two options for storage:
- In an unheated room. Rent is cheaper, but all metal components need to be thoroughly treated with special oil. The container is well ventilated, but due to temperature fluctuations, condensation may appear on the surfaces. The likelihood of rust, paint damage, and reduced rubber elasticity noticeably increases.
- In a heated room. This is the ideal solution for long-term bike storage. A constant temperature is maintained, preventing temperature fluctuations. The humidity level is kept between 50-70%. The requirements for preparing the components are lower.
Storing a bicycle at home is not the best solution. It requires enough space, which is sometimes critically lacking in ordinary apartments. Therefore, renting a storage room or a box would be an excellent option. The cost of the service is much lower than buying a new vehicle or repairing it.
